Jerash - The hippodrome, built sometime between the 1st and 3rd centuries. This old sports ground (244m by 50m) was once surrounded by seating for up to 15,000 spectators and hosted mainly athletics competitions and chariot races. Modern day chariot races are held twice daily, except Friday when there is one performance at 10am (I visited on a Friday and missed it).
Jerash - The Central Plaza and the city's main north-south thoroughfare known as the Cardo Maximus. The Cardo Maximus stretches for 800m from the Central Plaza to the North Gate.
Jerash - The Cardo Maximus is the cities main thoroughfare and stretches for 800m from the Central Plaza to the North Gate. It was originally built in the 1st century AD, but has been rebuilt and redesigned several times since. The street still contains the original flagstone paving. It was once lined by about 500 columns that were deliberately built at uneven heights to compliment the facades of the buildings that once stood behind them.
